XTERRA West Championship, Temecula

Report by Damian Gonzalez

Temecula CA
1 mi swim - 25mile MTB - 6mi run

Temecula is hot!

I went in to it knowing I was not in shape due a couple knee injuries that layed me off for a couple of months, so I thought I would strategize the best I could in regards to fueling and hydration during the race. Maybe I wont be fast but if I dont bonk I should do OK.

I drank about 3 1/2 bottles on the bike and 1 on the run. I took in a little over 800 calories throughout the race.

The race took me 2 hours and 56 min. to complete. I have to say the run hurt. I had lost my run I had built up earlier this season. I even tripped on a root on a downhill section that took me for a roll.

I had a few bike issues as well. The rear brake rotor came loose but he bolts managed to stay halfway in to keep it from totally falling off and jamming my wheel. Also I removed my markings on my seat post and during one of my prerides I overtighted the seatpost clamp bolt and snapped it. I replaced the bolt and reset the seatpost but the seat was a little low. So I felt a little clumsy throughout the race but managed to win my division (30-34) and 25 overall.

I know it wasnt the best I could do but I'll take it. My sister shot some video which I will post on the team site. The knees feel good so I can start working on my run again. At this point I am in good point standings to win the regional title.

I will also be doing Hamilton in the 4's. See you guys there.
