XTERRA CASTAIC 4-29-2007
1200M swim - 16mi MTB - 6mi run
Report by Damian Gonzalez

DATE: April 29

My first race since Sea Otter and it was questionable if I would race due to my knee injury. I had been rehabbing, streching, rolling out the bands and taking it easy on the trainer, no running though.

I went down to Ventura to stay with family and prerode one loop of the bike course the day before the race. The plan was if I felt ANYTHING in my knee no matter how minor, I would not race, but film instead.

Well the preride went well and decided to go for it but I was focusing on finishing the race without pain than placing. Had an OK swim and took it easy on the bike. Surprisingly I came ito the run in second. About halfway throught he run I felt my knee getting sore. It was not pain but it was definitely reminding me so I backed off into a jog. I was passed by 3 guys and finished fifth.

Top pro, Mike Vine took the win followed by James Walsh and Jimmy wills. I was glad to have stuck to my plan and since then the knee feels good. I iced it and heated it in the hot tub the following couple days and have been increasing my mileage since then. I hope to be in decent shape for XTERRA west regionals on the 20th.

My brother Luis ended up shooting some film and I have posted it here.
