Xterra Real MTB Tri 4.1.2007

.5 mile swim-16 mi MT Bike-3.5mile run

This was my first XTERRA event of the season and have been looking forward to it. Sun was out, the water was about 60 degrees, the bike course challenging with a rocky dismount section, water and mud crossings, a few sand pits and lots of fast smooth singletrack. I was in the top ten out of the water and moved up quickly on the bike but trailed Courtney Cardenas, David Collinger and Phillip Glen.

Courtney put in an awsome bike leg and held first position all the way into T2. I passed David and Courtney pretty early but phillip had 30 seconds on me early on the run. Even though my run has been improved this year I knew he was going to make me work. On the straighter sections of the run, about halfway through the course, I was about 15-20 sec. back and was trying to come from behind on the run.

Right after that he was out of sight and I made a wrong turn onto a fire road that was not taped off and was part of the course last year. I cut about 200 meters of pretty technical terrain and ended up jumping ahead of Phillip due to that mistake. He was given first place and I was docked 2 min, still maintaining 2nd place overall. I wish I couldve been there with Philip. It wouldve made for a great finish to push each other to the line. Jamie Whitmore Took it for the Female division followed by Katina Tobin and Emma Garrard. It was cool to see lots of folks make the trip out there from all over Caifornia and Nevada. "One arm Willie" from Redlands was there. This guy is amazing.

Check out the video for this race.

I'll doing Copperopolis Road race next weekend followed by sea otter.
