Burlingame Criterium goes to Brems and Jacques-Maynes

Burlingame, Calif. (June 25, 2006) - Spectators at yesterday's 20th annual Fidelity Investments Burlingame Criterium presented by NAIBT Commercial had a chance to see varied outcomes to the pro-am men's and women's races, with Karen Brems (Webcor-Platinum) taking a field sprint and Andy Jacques-Maynes (California Giant Strawberries) winning out of a breakaway.

In the men's pro/1/2 event, a few promising breakaways emerged from the field of 104 during the first half of the 60 minute race before Jacques-Maynes (California Giant Cycling), Eric Wohlberg (Symmetrics Cycling), and Devon Vigus (Team Monex) rolled away.

It took about 15 minutes for Jacques-Maynes and Wohlberg to up the pace enough to send Vigus out of the breakaway and into the back of the field.

This left Jacques-Maynes and Wohlberg to duke it out and, although Jacques-Maynes gained the upper hand at the finish, Wohlberg's second-place moved him into the lead in the NCNCA Premier Series.

In the women's race, there were a few small attacks but nothing escaped, as the PROMAN/Paradigm, McGuire Cycling and PABW powered by TIBCO teams largely kept each other at bay.

Brems took a clear victory in the field sprint, followed by Laura Charameda (McGuire Cycling) and Alexis Alexander (PABW powered by TIBCO).

However, the spotlight was by no means dominated by the pros, as over 600 children took part in the Ryan Phua Memorial Kids' Ride, held in memory of one of the twin sons born to cancer survivor John Phua and his wife, Michele.

The Ryan Phua Memorial Fund (Ryan's Fund) is established through the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) to fund cancer related programs in the Bay Area.

Larry Nolan (AMD Masters Cycling Team) also enjoyed a successful outing in Burlingame, winning both the Masters 45+ and Masters 35+ Cat 1/2/3 races.

Other winners at Burlingame were Steven Reid (Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club) in the Cat 4 men's race, Christopher Coble (Fremont Wheelers) in the Cat 3 race and Ken Arizpe (Kovarus/Squadra Ovest) in the Masters 35+ Cat 4.

As noted, Wohlberg now leads the Men Pro/1/2 standings for the Northern California/Nevada Cycling Association's 2006 NCNCA Premier Series, while Helene Drumm (PROMAN/Paradigm) and Jeff Angermann (Team Spine) maintained their leads in the Women and Masters 35+ categories.

The Fidelity Investments Burlingame Criterium presented by NAIBT Commercial was the fifth of nine races in the NCNCA Premier Series, which continues with the July 4th Criterium in Davis, California.
