Elite Men Pro/1/2 report from race winner Devon Vigus of the McGuire-Langdale Pro Cycling Team

Picture this: very fast flat course, Webcor, Discovery Channel and McGuire/Langdale all represented, 60 minute race, and a little rain. A great recipe for a fun race!

The race started out fast and furious with attacks from the gun. Pat [Dunaway] and Colin [Beardsley] were all over everything - I mean they were in every single move - awesome!

Immediately, it was apparent that no break was going to be successful so I mostly sat and waited. I marked the sprinters and made sure they didn’t try to get away.

With six laps to go in the race, Colin made it into a very motivated breakaway and they ended up getting the biggest gap on the field that any break had gotten all day. The field hesitated for a lap and then started chasing.

It was perfect, all I had to do was sit and wait because I knew Colin could win from that group. With five laps to go I hooked up with Pat. He was amazing! He kept me up in the top ten and completely out of trouble. With three laps to go Colin's break away still had about 15 seconds when they announced a $100 prime. He sprinted for it and got it easily - nice job Colin!

With one lap to go the break had five seconds and Pat was still looking after me in the field. The pace was very fast going through the first two corners. Along the backstretch we caught the break and there was a big cluster on the right side. I told Pat to go as hard as he could to get me to the last corner. Swinging left, around the cluster on the right and through the last two corners we went. A perfect lead out!

Pat delivered me in first position through the last corner and into the final stretch. I sprinted as hard as I could. With 20 meters to go I saw a wheel on my left! Giving it one last kick I crossed the line and won the race!!! It was my first win as a pro but with teamwork like that I had it easy. Thanks again guys!
